Kasia Marciz asks this question:

I'm writing to ask about Schoenbornia humicola, more specifically, about the shell of the species.

I was trying to find information about the type of shell Schoenbornia humicol builds.

I contacted Ferry and he assured me about what I found in literature (paper attached, the original description as Pseudonebela humicola):

Schönborn describes the shell has having "siliceous plates as idiosomes" ("… mit Siliziumplättchen als Idiosomen"). Further he observed new-formed idiosoms in the cell plasm just like Euglypha ("Im Plasma der inaktiven Stadien beobachtete ich mehrmals vorgebildete Idiosomen ähnlich wie bei Eulgypha.").

Ferry Siemensma confirmed this.

Edward Mitchell believes these are not idiosomes because the platelets are not of uniform shape or size, at least according to the illustration used by Meisterfeld (2002). Rather they look at best as recycled idiosomes but may even be flat mineral such as mica.

Andrey Tsyganov agrees. "I agree with Edward that truly idiosomic species should have limited number of plates types of regular shape because they synthesize them. In case with Shoenbornia it seems that the plates are irregular in shape and size that rather points to extracellular origin of the plates than to unusual intracellular synthesis. "

Hi Anna,

I'm quite sure that what you observed would have been called Phryganella acropodia by many ecologists. I have frequently observed very similar tests ca. 30µm diameter together with larger ones ca. 50µm. Depending on which key you use they may even be included in the Cyclopyxis arcelloides-type.

Of course if you have living specimens with visible pseudopods you will know if they are Phryganella or not based on the pseudopod morphology. Empty tests are more tricky.

It is quite clear that these general morphotypes likely include several taxa. It would be very useful to conduct a study combining morphometrics, DNA barcoding and ecological observations to clarify this maze…

Forum category: General Discussion / Twilight Zone discussion
Forum thread: Cryptodifflugia question by Anna Šímová

Dear colleagues,
I would be really grateful if you could check my identification of certain testate amoebae species, which I found in a peat of Kotelnice poor fen. This species - Cryptodifflugia pusilla - was dominant in one development phase of studied mire that was reconstructed as a forested transitional mire with a mix of tree (mainly spruce, less pine, alder and fir), lower groundwater level (DWT around 11 cm; based on TA), lower pH and nutrients (pH around 4, Ellenberg indicator value for nutrient availability around 2; based on plant macrofossils).

Thank you in advance for any comments!

Best regards,
Anna Šímová

The link for picture will add here Daniel Lahr (Thanks a lot!), because I'm not allowed to publish links on this site.

Forum category: General Discussion / Twilight Zone discussion
Forum thread: Cryptodifflugia pusilla?

Dear all,

Many of you have been asking about the meeting. We are running a little late with arrangements but the meeting will occur form September 12 to 15 in Ilhabela, SP, Brazil. We will also have a ISoP sponsored student award that should help pay some students (at the same time giving them an awesome title on their CVs).

My expectations were to have the website and registrations up and running by April 1st, but this will not happen. Hopefully by mid-April we will be in business.

But do not despair, the meeting will happen and I do hope to see all of you here.

Best,

Forum category: General Discussion / ISTA meetings
Forum thread: ISTA 8 Brazil

Thanks for your comments Dan and Ferry. We are in the process of trying to get some SEM images of the microfossil along with some other things from the Antarctic Peninsula here at Exeter, but it is taking longer than we hoped. We have no information about any potential pseudopodia unfortunately - we have never seen the amoeba (if that is what it is!) alive, despite relatively high concentrations of it in certain samples. In addition, I cannot remember seeing an example of this test with any remnant amoeba still inside either. This has actually led us to question whether it is a testate amoeba at all - Ralf Meisterfeld certainly seemed skeptical that it was when looking at a sample at ISTA7. Obviously the logistical complications of working on the AP prevent us from popping out to get more sample!! I have some fossil sample that I can send you, Ferry, I will email you now.

Forum category: General Discussion / Twilight Zone discussion
Forum thread: Unidentified microfossil from the Antarctic Peninsula

The problem with one image is that it usually doesn't give all the diagnostic information we need. Looking at the image I have the impression that this shell has two short spines. It also has a thickened rim around its pseudostome, like in Heleopera. I might be a Difflugia, but I need more information. I don't think it's D. lucida.

Forum category: General Discussion / Twilight Zone discussion
Forum thread: Agglutinated shell by Manish Kumar

Hi Tom,

The problem is that you don't have any information about its pseudopodia, that would really help. It could be a Pseudodifflugia, as Dan writes, but also a Cryptodifflugia or a new taxon. Could you send me a sample? I always like to see it myself ;-)

Best wishes,

Ferry

Forum category: General Discussion / Twilight Zone discussion
Forum thread: Unidentified microfossil from the Antarctic Peninsula

Hi Tom!

To me this could be a Chlamydophryiidae or a Pseudodifflugiidae. These small testates with filopodia are desperately needing to be studied more deeply! If I really really needed to say a genus, I would say Ovulinata. I wonder what others think.

any chance you could get an SEM image? or send a sample to someone to image it?

best,

dan

Forum category: General Discussion / Twilight Zone discussion
Forum thread: Unidentified microfossil from the Antarctic Peninsula

We have found this microfossil in a good number of fossil and surface samples from across the Antarctic Peninsula but we're not entirely sure what it might be - testate amoebae or otherwise. A colleague has also found a similar microfossil in salt marsh deposits from the Falklands/Malvinas.

I brought a sample to ISTA7 in Poznan but it was difficult to reach a firm conclusion in the time available. Any further suggestions are most welcomed!

Best wishes,

Tom Roland.

Forum category: General Discussion / Twilight Zone discussion
Forum thread: Unidentified microfossil from the Antarctic Peninsula
